Today I had the opportunity to take my kiddo down to the lagoon and watch seal harvesting. Two guys were able to bring back 7 seals for the village.
Not to be to graphic, but I did not know how they killed a seal, so I was that girl asking the villagers how it happens. If you get grossed out... stop reading and tune into the next stop.
Seals tend to stay in the shallow water and when someone sees them they will shoot them and hurry to go and bring them into the boat. If they are not able to collect the seal before it sinks, they wait till it is low tide and then go collect it.
Then they brought it back to the village and had them lined up on the beach. People from the village came down and cut the amount that they needed. Every part of the seal was used and parts of the seal were given back to nature as a thank-you for providing. It is really awesome to see the subsistence lifestyle in play... Working together and providing for everyone.
Four of the 7 that were brought back.
